What is Zero Point

A high-altitude area beyond Sonamarg on the Zoji La approach, often snow-covered even when lower valleys are green. Offers wide snow fields and mountain panoramas. Not a formal tourist centre — essentially a scenic endpoint for permitted cab drives.

When it is open

Typically accessible mid-May to early October when snow clears from the road. Closed or restricted in winter and early spring. Status changes daily — confirm with your driver or hotel on the morning of your Sonamarg trip. Heavy rain or fresh snow can close access temporarily.

How to visit

Base in Sonamarg town — hire a local union cab for the Zero Point drive (₹1,500–₹3,000, 2–3 hours round trip from Sonamarg). Thajiwas Glacier and Zero Point cannot both be rushed in one short visit — choose based on season and interest.

What to carry

Warm layers even in July — temperature drops sharply at altitude. Sunglasses and sunscreen for snow glare. Snacks and water. Altitude is significant; move slowly if you feel breathless. Not recommended for very elderly travellers or infants.
