Best Time to Visit Kashmir

Month-by-month guide to pick the right season — tulips, green meadows, autumn Chinars, or winter snow.

Quick answer

April to June and September to October suit most sightseeing trips. December to February is for snowfall and Gulmarg snow activities. Late March to mid-April is tulip season. July to August can be busy with domestic tourists but valleys stay accessible.

March to April — spring and tulips

Temperatures rise from 5–15°C toward 10–20°C. Late March opens the Tulip Garden (peak bloom often first half of April). Gardens green up, snow melts at lower altitudes, and roads to most main sights reopen. Good shoulder season for fewer crowds than summer.

May to June — peak summer

Daytime 15–25°C in Srinagar; cooler at Gulmarg and Sonamarg. All main routes open — Pahalgam valleys, Thajiwas, Zero Point (when permitted), and full Gondola operations. Busiest domestic holiday period; book hotels and cabs 3–4 weeks ahead for May holidays.

July to August — monsoon touch

Kashmir gets less rain than the plains but occasional showers and mist are common. Landscapes are lush green. Good for travellers who prefer fewer peak-season crowds. Carry a light rain layer; some mountain views may be hazy on cloudy afternoons.

September to October — autumn gold

Clear skies, 10–22°C range, and Chinar trees turning gold — many photographers’ favourite window. Ideal for couples and families who want comfortable walking weather without winter cold. Saffron harvest in Pampore happens around October.

November to February — winter snow

November is transitional and can feel cold without guaranteed snow. December to February: 0 to -10°C at night in Srinagar, colder at Gulmarg. Best for snow lovers and skiers. Some higher roads close intermittently; pack heavy winter layers and plan flexible days.
