Srinagar Travel Guide

Dal Lake, houseboats, Mughal gardens, old city heritage, and the natural base for every Kashmir itinerary.

How to spend 1–2 days

Day 1: morning shikara on Dal Lake, floating vegetable market (early start around 6 AM if interested), Boulevard walk, and sunset from the lake. Day 2: Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chashme Shahi, and optional Pari Mahal viewpoint. Add Tulip Garden in late March to April.

Dal Lake and houseboats

Dal is the iconic centrepiece — shikara rides take 1–2 hours. A houseboat night is worth it once; compare cleanliness and heating before booking. Nigeen Lake is a quieter alternative for overnight stays. Expect ₹500–₹1,500 for shikara and ₹3,000–₹25,000 for houseboats depending on category.

Mughal gardens

Nishat and Shalimar are the headline pair on the eastern shore — allow 2–3 hours combined. Chashme Shahi is smaller but charming. Pari Mahal offers city and Dal views from above. Entry fees are modest (₹20–₹50 each). Visit mornings for softer light and fewer tour groups.

Old city and markets

Jama Masjid, Khanqah-e-Moula, and old bazaar lanes give cultural depth beyond the lake. Allow a half-day if heritage interests you. Respectful dress and quiet behaviour in religious sites. Try Kahwa and local bakery items in the old quarter.

Base for the valley

Most itineraries use Srinagar as the hub for Gulmarg and Sonamarg day trips (2N minimum), then transfer to Pahalgam for 1–2 nights. Airport to Dal Lake hotels is 30–45 minutes. Stock up on cash, snacks, and any pharmacy needs before heading to smaller towns.
