About Pampore saffron
Pampore town on the Srinagar–Jammu highway is Kashmir’s saffron heartland. The crocus bloom paints fields purple for a short window each autumn — typically late October to mid-November depending on weather. Outside bloom season, fields are still visitable but less photogenic.
Bloom season visit
Farmers harvest saffron stigmas by hand during morning hours in bloom weeks. Visit early (7–9 AM) for active picking scenes. Combine with a Srinagar-to-airport or south Kashmir drive — Pampore is about 15 km from Srinagar city.
Buying saffron
Buy from reputable shops or cooperatives with labelling and receipt. Genuine Kashmiri saffron: ₹350–₹550 per gram. Deep red threads with minimal yellow style are quality markers. Avoid suspiciously cheap packs sold to tourists at highway stops.
How to fit in your trip
A 1–2 hour stop en route to or from Srinagar airport works well in autumn. Not worth a standalone day trip. Pair with apple orchard drives in Shopian during harvest season (September–October) for a full autumn Kashmir experience.
