A 1–2 hour shikara ride covers Dal’s channels, floating gardens, and vendor boats selling flowers and snacks. Best at sunrise (6–8 AM) or sunset (5–7 PM depending on season). Fix the rate before boarding — typical range ₹500–₹1,500. Morning rides can include the vegetable market if you start early enough.
Houseboat stay — what to expect
Houseboats are stationary wooden homes on Dal or Nigeen — not cruise boats. Standard boats offer basic rooms with attached bath; deluxe and luxury tiers add better furnishings, heating, and lake views. Check cleanliness, hot water, and heating (critical in winter) before paying. One night is enough for most first-timers.
Dal vs Nigeen
Dal is busier and more iconic — better for first visits and photography. Nigeen is quieter, preferred by couples seeking calm evenings. Both offer shikara access and houseboat stays. Nigeen hotels on shore are an alternative if you want lake views without sleeping on a boat.
Booking tips
Book through your tour operator or a reviewed property — avoid touts at the airport offering very cheap boats. Read recent reviews for heating and bathroom condition. Ask whether meals are included and whether the boat is on Dal or Nigeen. Peak season (May–June, Dec–Jan) requires advance booking.
